성민화의 작업은 관객이 작업에 접근함에 따라 얻게 되는 경험을 중요시하고,있다. 관객은 그의 작업에 포함되어있는 요소를 인지하고, 연관성을 찾아내어 해결의 실마리를 찾아내게 된다. 이 고전적이지만 아직도 유효한 작업유형은 60년대의 Fluxus해프닝의 발전과 그로 인해 파생되고 널리 보급된 “ 관객참여” 를 문제시하고 있으며, 성민화의 작업 역시 이 전통의 선상에 자리하고 있는 것이다.

한 작업을 예로 들자면, 붉은 커튼이 걸려있다 – 양쪽이 다 닫힌 채로- 여기에는 그 뒤에 창문 ( 혹은 다른 무엇) 이 있을 것이라는 기대감을 불러일으키지만 사실은 텅 빈 벽이 존재할 뿐이다. 관객은 먼저 호기심을 가지게 되고, 자신의 기대감에 의해 행동하게 된다. 그러나 그 기대감은 실망감으로 바뀌고 결국은 그 안에서 자기자신을 발견하게 된다.

그의 많은 작업에서 관객은 작업이 제공하는 것과 적극적으로 타협을 해야만 한다. 관객은 그들의 환경과 격리되는 공간으로 들어갈 것인지에 대한 결정을 내려야 하며, 그 안에서 빛 소리 어둠과 마주하게 되는 것이다. 작업의 움직이는 일부분으로써의 관객의 역할은 여기에서 분명해지며 관객은 극한상황으로 몰리게 된다.

관객- 작업이라는 낡은 관계는 여기에서 새롭게 정의 내려진다.

The viewer's experience during their contemplation of Min-Hwa Sung's works of art is central to all her work.

As a rule, the viewer perceives the elements of a work of art, puts them into context and thereby, deduces meaning. This traditional—but still largely valid—model has been questioned by the development of Happening and Fluxus in the 1960s and the virulent models of viewer participation derived from this development. The work of Min-Hwa Sung is also in this tradition.

An example of this can be found in one of her earlier works, a red window curtain which, when drawn apart, does not reveal the expected window—in this case, signifying the image in general—but rather the wall on which it is mounted. The viewer is initially drawn to this and led to take action to satisfy his expecatition, which is then disappointed and thrown back to itself.

In many of her works, viewers have to actively confront the offerings of those works: they have to decide to enter rooms where they are being isolated from their surrondings and are confronted with mirror images of themselves, audio recordings, light and darkness. The role of the viewer as an active accomplice of a work of art is clarified and carried out to extremes.

The traditional relationship of Viewer – Art work is thereby

re-defined.
